Today we went up to find the wild bison and to check on how they are looking and doing. Not easy, as the last GPS signal from Romanița (group leader of the largest group) we received at 02:00 am. This gave us a starting point to find their tracks and follow them down. We were lucky with the weather. The sun was out and still had some of that power of summer. The wind was as wintery as it gets, but there was a spring like excitement around it all that made up for it. Species of birds, not often spotted in the tourism season flew over us. Winter migrants like large flocks of Hawfinches and Bramblings and Bullfinches. All adding their unique aspect to the soundscape, while the landscape really fixes your attention. The overall brown hills with only birches sporting their last golden leaves on their crown. Some green conifers and the pastures give you some reference of color and looking at bushes that all look like bison from a far makes you aware that there are actually bison around that you can see from the opposite valley! So its always worth taking a breath when standing in front of such a view and to keep your eyes out for some movement. With the snow covered Țarcu mountain peak in the background it’s not hard to see why bison would sleep with such a view.
